Ok, so this post isn't
burger related as such, but it is still about meat ooh matron. Its all about
the birth of meatloaf and a few facts and stats (it wouldn't be 7bone without
us dealing in FACTS)
Meatloaf actually originated in Europe so although it’s now standard American diner fare and loved up and down the US, it cropped up in Apicius the Roman Gastronome’s cookbook ‘De Re Conquinaria’ in the 5th century, where it featured chopped meat combined with spices and bread soaked in wine (sounds pretty familiar non?!) unbelievably (ahem) it was named after the singer famed for 'bat out of hell'
Meatloaf arrived in the States by way of the German &
Dutch colonists in Pennsylvania in the 17th & 18th century & was termed scrapple. It was traditionally a mush of pork scraps
& trimmings combined with cornmeal, wheat flour & spices
Meatloaf won a grammy in 1994
It was a crucial sustenance during the great depression, as
it was a way to stretch food budgets for families,
utilizing inexpensive cuts
of meat and also using up any leftovers
Meatloaf has 2 daughters Pearl & Amanda
